How to Copy Layers From One Photoshop File to Another

To copy a layer from one Photoshop file to another, open both documents, select the layer in the Layers panel, and drag it onto the destination document's tab. Hold the pointer over the tab until that file comes forward, then drop it onto the canvas. Alternatively, right-click the layer, choose Duplicate Layer, and pick the target file from the Document dropdown. Both methods keep adjustment layers and smart objects editable in the destination — unlike merging or copying pixels.

Either approach works fine with two or three files open. The friction starts when you're moving a grade or a retouching stack across a whole campaign: a dozen tabs with truncated names, and no reliable way to tell which one you're dropping onto. Group related layers before you drag so you move one unit. Name groups clearly in the source so they stay readable after they land. If dimensions or profiles differ, check the result after the copy. For retouching sets where consistency matters, align canvas size and profile first.
